ABI announces Aviva’s Andy Briggs as next chair

Aviva UK Life CEO and Aviva Global Life chairman Andy Briggs has been nominated by the Association of British Insurers’ (ABI) board to become its next chair.

Briggs, who has been deputy ABI chair since November 2015 and is currently chair of the ABI audit committee, will officially take up the role after the ABI’s AGM in October, and succeeds AXA UK group chief executive Paul Evans.

He joined the group executive and Aviva PLC board in April 2015, to lead Aviva’s enlarged UK life business following the acquisition of Friends Life Group where he was group chief executive.

Prior to that he was CEO of Scottish Widows, CEO of the general insurance businesses of Lloyds Banking Group, and CEO of the Prudential Group’s retirement income business.

Direct Line Group CEO Paul Geddes will become the ABI’s deputy chair.

“I am delighted to be the next chairman of the ABI,” Briggs said.

“The insurance industry is a core part of the UK economy and one of its major employers, providing financial peace of mind for millions of businesses, homeowners and savers.

“I believe that as an industry our unwavering focus should be to help customers think both about savings, so that they can enjoy a secure and prosperous retirement.”

Current ABI chair, Paul Evans, said that it gave him great pleasure to pass
the chairmanship to Briggs, who would bring “enormous experience and personal commitment” to the role.

“I wish him every success over the coming two years,” he said.
