Majority of pension professionals not engaging on nature-related risk

More than three quarters (76 per cent) of pension professionals are not yet engaging with their clients on nature-related risk, according to research from the Society of Pension Professionals (SPP).

The poll, taken during an SPP event on nature-related risk, found that 89 per cent said they intend to engage with their clients on nature-related risk in the future.

However, when respondents were asked “do you actively engage with your clients on nature-related risk?”, 2 per cent said "frequently", 22 per cent said "tentatively" and 76 per cent said they did not.

Commenting on the findings, Barnett Waddingham senior sustainability investment consultant and chair of the event, Claire Keeffe, said; “Although nature-related risk is a vitally important issue, it’s one that pension professionals have only recently started to take note of, so it’s not surprising that more than three quarters of attendees said they’re not yet engaging with their clients on the issue.

“However, it’s fantastic to find that 89 per cent have stated they will now be engaging on this issue as a result of what they’ve heard today.

“This powerfully demonstrates the positive impact that raising awareness and understanding of nature-related risk can have.”
