Appointments update - 8 May 2024

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) has confirmed Paul Sweeting as the next president-elect of the IFoA.

Sweeting will assume the role on 24 July 2024 at the IFoA Annual General Meeting, when Kartina Tahir Thomson becomes president. Under the new IFoA governance reforms, Sweeting will be the first president to serve a two-year term from the summer of 2025. He is a senior advisor at the Hassana Investment Company and is an honorary professor of actuarial science at the University of Kent. He is also a fellow of the IFoA and helped design and write the textbook for the profession’s enterprise risk management subject. Sweeting has chaired several actuarial boards, committees, and working parties and has previously served as honorary secretary for the Institute of Actuaries before its merger with the Faculty of Actuaries.

The Employer Covenant Practitioners Association (ECPA) has elected Luke Hartley as chair, succeeding Guy Mander.

Hartley is partner and head of pensions advisory at Grant Thornton, which he joined in 2022 after working in employer covenant advisory for more than 15 years at two independent advisory firms. Hartley has experience across various covenant advisory services, including triennial reviews, annual monitoring, corporate restructuring, and M&A activity across a range of sectors and asset sizes. He has worked on several landmark regulatory cases and through a six-month secondment to The Pensions Regulator in the first half of 2022. He is succeeded as ECPA vice-chair by Helena Mules, a senior covenant advisor at WTW. She has 15 years of experience supporting trustee and corporate clients. She also has a background in restructuring and is a chartered certified accountant.

Quilter has appointed Simon Durling as investment director.

Durling has 35 years of experience in asset management, wealth management, and financial services. He has worked at various firms, including St James’s Place, Barclays Bank, and Santander Asset Management as a senior commercial strategist. In his new role, Durling will be responsible for the promotion of Quilter’s range of investment propositions, reporting to lead investment director, Andy Miller.
