Jonathan Reynolds has been named as Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary by new Labour leader, Keir Starmer.
The former Shadow Economics Secretary is the Labour MP for Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley, Longdendale and Dukinfield.
Commenting on the announcement on Twitter, Reynolds said that pensions “need serious long-term thinking”.
“Incredibly proud and humbled to be asked by Keir Starmer to join the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions,” he stated.
“I know just how big this brief is to both individuals and the UK economy”.
Reynolds takes on the position following his stint as Shadow Economics Secretary, a role he held for three and a half years.
He is also a former Shadow Energy Minister, Shadow Transport Minister and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition.
Referring to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Reynolds added: “This crisis has brutally confirmed that our existing welfare state is not fit for purpose.
“Too often it leaves people without support and fails to treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
